Catapult

CATAPULT

Today we lost half our class to the Kids for Kids Concert so what do you do with a whole group of boys from Room 14 and 5. Make catapults.  First we learnt some history of catapults. Then we made one with popsicle sticks, rubber bands, plastic spoons and pompoms. After testing it, we modified the design and then we had a competition to see whose could go the furtherest.
After play we got out the iPads and used Book Creator to show our learning which was heaps - history, science, technology, reading, language and maths.

Make It Rain - Science

MAKE IT RAIN - SCIENCE
Today we made it rain in Room 5. We learnt that as clouds get more and more water in them they get too heavy and it rains. We showed this by doing a science experiment with a jar, water, shaving foam and blue dye. We filled 3/4 of a jar with water then added shaving foam to be a cloud. We then added dye slowly and watched as it went through the 'cloud' to form rain.

Te Manawa Visit

TE MANAWA VISIT

Today we went to Te Manawa to learn about toys and games of the past and present for our inquiry unit. We had a great time. We started at the Art Gallery where we drew art we saw. We then looked at the rest of Te Manawa before we went to learn about toys and games. We got to play with old things and new modern toys. It was a great day. Thanks to the parents who helped us and the teachers at Te Manawa.

Cup Game

Cup Game
Today we learnt how you can make, and have fun playing with something that doesn't cost any money. We first had to make our cups and balls. We then thought of different games we could play with it.

Old Toys

OLD TOYS
It has been really neat this week with many children bringing in their old toys from home. Some are from parents, grandparents and even older. Niamh's dad Chris bought in an old gramophone record player. We were also able to work out what toy cars were the oldest. The eldest one had metal wheels, the next was metal but plastic wheels (both of those were about 70 years old). Then it went to a metal truck with plastic windscreen and wheels and brighter colours (50 years old). Finally we had a car that was about 15 years old that was very colourful, totally plastic and had batteries in it so it made noise.

Playing with toys

PLAYING WITH TOYS

Today to start our Inquiry Learning we played with toys. Some were really old (60 years) and others were at least 10 years old. We played with marbles, slinkies, barbies, knuckle bones, old toy cars and lots of others. Tomorrow we will work out what is the oldest toy. Do you know?

Blobs in a bottle

BLOBS IN A BOTTLE

FOR SCIENCE WE DID AN EXPERIMENT CALLED BLOBS IN A BOTTLE. IT SHOWED THE REACTION BETWEEN OIL, WATER AND ALKA SELTZER TABLETS. WE LEARNT THAT IT WAS LIKE A LAVA LAMP AND THAT WATER IS MORE DENSE THAN OIL AND THEY DON'T MIX TOGETHER. WE LOVED WATCHING THE REACTION. AFTER WE DID THE REAL EXPERIMENT WE WONDERED IF IT WOULD WORK WITH LESS OIL AND MORE WATER. IT STILL WORKED. WE ALSO SHOCK THE CONTAINER TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED.

Playing with Magnets

PLAYING WITH MAGNETS

Today we played with magnets. We started by putting a paperclip in a glass of water.  We had to get the paperclip out without getting the magnet wet.  We then had some wonderings; like what happens if it is a plastic container or we have leaves, sand or bark in the glass instead of water.

We learnt that we could only save our 'treasure' in water and oil and it did not matter if it was a plastic or glass container. So it only worked when it was a LIQUID in the glass and not a DENSE substance.

We then played with magnets to learn what was around the classroom that was magnetic.

Thinking Hats

THINKING HATS
We have been learning about De Bono's Thinking Hats. In groups we paper mached hats and then decorated them to represent one of De Bono's hats. The blue hat is what is going to happen next, the white is facts, the yellow is good things and the black bad things. The red is our feelings on a topic and the green is our creative ideas.  We worked well in our groups and loved showing the whole school our learning at assembly.
